The name "Somerhalder" originates from his adoptive great-grandfather. His biological great-grandfather, a wealthy English landowner, who impregnated one of his mistresses and paid an immigrant worker who married this woman and give the baby a name, which was Somerhalder. Somerhalder began her modeling career, encouraged by his mother, at age 10. He modeled in New York , Paris, Milan and London. His credits include Calvin Klein modeling , American Eagle Outfitters , Dolce & Gabbana , Gucci , Versace and Guess for two fall seasons. At age 17, began studying acting in New York.

While still modeling for model agency DNA Models .

His first major acting role was in The Rules of Attraction .

His work includes appearances on television shows such as Smallville (Adam Knight, a dead person is kept alive by special drug), CSI: Miami, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation , now and again, and The Big Easy, as well as the production of Recess. Also plays Salvatore Damon's role in the series The Vampire Diaries.

His most important role, so far, has been part of the cast of the first season of the television series Lost ( Lost as the character of Boone Carlyle ).
